Stage of Project

  • Environmental Assessment: Many infrastructure projects must first undergo an Environmental Assessment (EA). An EA is a planning process which must consider all environmental impacts, appropriate measures to manage the impacts before the project is implemented, and include consultation with potentially impacted parties and members of the public. More information on the EA process.
  • Design: The design stage of a project refers to the development of contract drawings and tender documents for the construction or implementation of the project; with architectural, engineering and business case components often part of this stage.
  • Construction: The construction stage is the implementation stage of the project, when the process of building or assembling the project has begun.

Category

The Region of Durham Works Department provides numerous essential municipal services to residents and businesses within Durham Region, including: the supply of treated drinking water, the collection and treatment of sewage, operation and maintenance of the Regional transportation network, and solid waste management. Works Department projects usually fall under one of the following categories:

  • Waste: Blue box collection to all municipalities and collection of green bins, yard waste, bulky and metal goods and garbage to Ajax, Pickering, Clarington, Brock, Uxbridge and Scugog.
  • Transportation: Planning design, construction and maintenance of the Regional transportation network including roads, storm sewers, bridges and culverts, as well as traffic signals and devices.
  • Water: Planning, design, construction, maintenance and operation of the water supply infrastructure. This infrastructure includes water supply plants, reservoirs, watermains, and pumping stations to provide clean safe water to our customers.
  • Sanitary Sewage: Water that is flushed down the toilet or emptied down the sink or drain is collected from customers through a system of sanitary sewers and sewage pumping stations. Wastewater is treated at one of the Region's sewage treatment plants.
  • Facilities: Planning, design, construction and maintenance of over 300 Regional facilities, such as homes for the aged, paramedic stations, and Durham Region Headquarters.
