The Regional Municipality of Durham has completed a Schedule 'B' Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) process set out by the Municipal Engineers’ Association and required under the Environmental Assessment Act to provide additional water supply, water storage, and pumping facilities, as well as improving water quality to serve the Community of Sunderland. Additional capacity will also support future development within the Sunderland Urban Area.
The study team considered and developed various alternative solutions that were evaluated through a multi-criteria analysis to recommend a preferred solution which was presented at the second Public Information Centre held virtually.
Based on the alternatives evaluation and feedback received from the public and stakeholders, the preferred solution for water supply capacity is to develop new groundwater wells in Sunderland to supplement and replace the existing wells (MW1 and MW2) and decommission the existing wells. In addition, the existing and emergency well (MW3) will be transitioned into a long term and permanent well.
The preferred alternative for water storage includes the construction of a new water storage facility and decommissioning of the existing standpipe. The preferred storage facility was identified to be an Elevated Tank. The new elevated tank site is located adjacent to the existing standpipe location, at the Township of Brock Parkland.
A Project File Report was prepared to document the planning, consultation and decision-making process. A copy of the Notice of Study Completion and the Project File Report are posted on this webpage for public review from February 28th to March 28th, 2023.
